What is the Open?

The CrossFit Open event is a worldwide competition where you have the ability to compare yourself with other CrossFitters around the world.

The event for you can mean a number of things depending on how you view it. Ultimately, it’s a test of your ability under controlled conditions and uniform standards.

CrossFit uses the Open to identify the top athletes to compete at CrossFit Regionals in May in Wollongong. For the average CrossFitter, like most of us, it’s a great chance to see just how far you’ve come and challenge yourself physically and mentally.

What is the format?

Each week for five weeks beginning at midday on Friday 27th February (Thursday 5pm LA time), CrossFit HQ will release a WOD designed to test a range of fitness skills and abilities.

To participate all you need to do is register via the games site https://games.crossfit.com/competition

Each week you will complete the WOD. You will enter your score on the games website and it will be validated by a certified CrossFit judge (we have several at our gym). It will then be listed on the worldwide scoreboard.

We will also run an online Custom Leaderboard for our gym and we hope to have this up on our website as we did last year. Strict movement standards are issued with each WOD and you will have a judge present to make sure you meet these standards.

Am I good enough?

It doesn’t matter. The format has always been set so that most people could do something and get a score. This year, for the first time, there will be a scaling option so if something is just beyond you there is an alternative.

Everyone should all be able to compete. Remember, unless you consider yourself a Regional possibility it’s an opportunity to just have fun and see where you’re at compared to a few hundred thousand other people worldwide doing exactly the same thing. Last year registrations were in excess of 300,000 and it continues to get bigger.

Community

Day-to-day you come in to the box and train with friends but you don’t often get the chance to cheer them on and encourage them to new goals. The Open WODs will be our Saturday session for the next five weeks and you can cheer, scream, shout and ‘no rep’ your mates in the spirit of friendly competition. It’s also not uncommon to see someone under the influence of adrenaline pull a PR or two so you can celebrate that as well.
